Stock vs. Custom Cabinets: An Honest Comparison
I build both stock installs and fully custom cabinetry, and the honest answer to "which is better" is: it depends what’s wrong with your kitchen right now.
Stock cabinets
Manufactured in fixed sizes and shipped ready to install. Fastest and least expensive option, and quality has genuinely improved over the years. The tradeoff is the room adapts to the cabinets — fillers and gap panels absorb whatever doesn’t fit a standard width, rather than the cabinets being built to the room.
Semi-custom and full custom
Semi-custom takes stock cabinet boxes and lets you adjust sizing, finish, and layout within limits. Full custom is built to your exact dimensions from scratch — every inch of a wall used, an awkward corner solved instead of hidden, storage designed around what you actually own.
My advice is the same every time someone asks: it’s not which option is better, it’s which one your specific room actually needs.
