Pergola vs. Covered Patio: What Actually Works in Alabama Heat

Both extend your living space outdoors. In Alabama summer, they behave very differently by two in the afternoon.

Pergolas

Open-slat structures that filter light rather than block it entirely. Great for morning coffee and evening dinners, less effective as the sole shade for a full Alabama summer afternoon unless paired with a retractable canopy or dense climbing vine.

Covered patios

A solid roof blocks sun and rain completely, which matters more here than in a milder climate — Southern summer sun at midday is a different intensity than most pergola designs account for. The tradeoff is a more substantial, permanent structure and a bigger investment.

Rule from the field If the space needs to be usable at 2pm in July, plan for a covered patio or a pergola with real shade supplementation — not a bare pergola alone.

The right answer depends on when you actually plan to use the space. Morning and evening favor a pergola; all-day usability favors solid cover.
