Choosing a Deck Material That Can Handle Southern Summers
Every deck material handles Southern heat and humidity differently — and differently than the box store display suggests.
Pressure-treated pine
The most affordable option and widely available. Handles moisture reasonably well thanks to the treatment, but is prone to warping and checking as it cycles through humid and dry stretches, and needs the most consistent maintenance of the common choices.
Cedar and composite
Cedar naturally resists rot and insects better than pine, with a warmer look, at a real cost premium and still requiring periodic sealing. Composite decking costs more up front but needs no staining or sealing and shrugs off humidity almost entirely — the tradeoff is a different look and feel underfoot than real wood, which matters to some homeowners and not at all to others.
There’s no universally right answer here — only the right tradeoff for how much upkeep you actually want to do.
